According to Charles Darwin, there is not much difference between us and our fellow dwellers of this planet and we only differ in degree rather than kind. But if there is really no difference then why are we so different? Marc Hauser, professor of psychology, biological anthropology, and organismic and evolutionary biology in Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences in his theory of “Humaniqueness” states that we have “floodlight” cognition which allows us to use our thought processes in new ways against the animal’s “laser beam” intelligence. This has been evident in our evolution. We have far better problem-solving ability than any other living being. When we were cavemen, our hands were not enough to help us hunt so we invented spears; when we became even more civilised, we started cultivating land.We are not compelled to live in the same situation that we were born in, no matter how rich or poor we are, we have the unique ability to change the surrounding around us for better. However, the problems that we faced earlier were different from the problems that we are facing today but we should not forget that we still have the capacity to solve these problems.
The book of Genesis says that we are created an image of god.Being the highest in our order, we have certain responsibilities bestowed on us
“The Lord god took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it”
The Vedas and the Dharmashashtras tell us that among the various duty a Grihastha(householder) must do are the duties towards the society and fellow living beings.Just like God guards every one of us he created an earthling counterpart of himself to guard all his other creations; to make sure they are living in a just and peaceful circumambient. If we do not take the responsibility, no one else will and that would be catastrophic.
Our real choices have real consequences.Again, an ability that is present in no other creature. The Quran tells us in the verses 76:3, 89:8-10, and 91:7-10 that humans have been created to choose between what is wrong and right.Only privileged have the luxury to choose what kind of world they want to live in.It is more a gift than a learned trait and we have to make sure that we do not misuse this gift and rather use this privilege to help the ones who are not in the same position as us.
We, humans, are social beings and have been so for a very long time. There is enough evidence in science to prove that had we not interacted with each other, we would not have evolved so much.We help each other, we stand for each other when one of us is in a problem. We have emotions that allow us to be social beings.
In the end the answer to the question “why should we care?” would be plain and simple:
“BECAUSE WE ARE DESIGHNED FOR IT”
